Olive oil consumption in Turkey
Turkey is a simple country where olive oil—especially organic olive oil—is still considered a luxury. But alongside the more basic and affordable vegetable oils, more and more people are turning to delicious and healthy olive oil.
This development has progressed significantly in recent years, demonstrating that olive oil is becoming increasingly popular in Turkey. Even the more conservative populations in the interior and Anatolia are increasingly incorporating the oil into their daily lives, thus contributing to its growing popularity.
Fun fact: Despite the ongoing growth phase, oil is now so popular in Turkey that per capita consumption is twice as high as in Germany – impressive!

Similar to consumption, the same applies to cultivation in Turkey. The country is currently the world's sixth-largest olive oil producer and will surely continue to develop into a more important part of the olive oil industry.
Traditionally, olive cultivation for olive oil took place only in the western Aegean and the southern Riviera. Today, cultivation, as well as consumption, is increasingly moving inland and to Anatolia.
The market for organic olive oil in Turkey is still relatively small, but it is growing steadily and has developed significantly in recent years. The Aydin and Edremit regions are favored for organic production and are now synonymous with organic olive oil in the country.
Organic olive oil from Turkey and tourism
Turkey is a popular tourist destination—its beautiful beaches, diverse markets, and delicious food attract huge numbers of tourists every year. This is, of course, wonderful for the Turkish economy, but unfortunately, it also leads to a conflict with olive cultivation.
Traditionally, olive trees are cultivated near the coast, where they have been successfully nurtured and harvested for years. Due to the increasing demand for beachfront hotels, this space has already been built up in Turkey, so olive farmers are increasingly moving to fields further inland.
